The Talk Test
The talk test is the simplest of all methods for measuring exercise intensity. If you are exercising with a buddy, it offers an excellent way to monitor each other, not to mention catch up on the neighborhood news.
If you are exercising at a pace that increases your respiratory rate but does not interfere with your ability to talk without your voice pattern breaking, you are exercising at a nice training level. If you or your buddy notice that either of you needs to gasp for air while talking, you are probably working outside your target zone. You should sound a little breathy while you talk, but not gaspy.
