thank you notes

Knowing your audience is the key for Thank You notes. If you want to thank someone who is part of an older generation and not as in-tune with technology, send a handwritten note the old fashioned way. They will appreciate it far more. If you know the person well and they are part of a younger, computer savvy generation, a nicely written e-mail “thank you” is acceptable. If you really want to make a nice impression, no matter what the age of the receiver, send it the old fashioned way.

Remember to send a Thank You note in the following situations:

After a nice dinner at someone’s home if you eat there just once in awhile.
After receiving any gift - Birthday, Christmas, etc.
After an overnight or longer visit in someone’s home.
After a special party at someone’s home.

A Thank You card should be sent within 1 week of the occasion. Sooner is better than later.

If a birthday or holiday present was received and opened in person and verbal thanks were given, a card is not necessary. However, it is never wrong to send a sweet note of thanks.

Always send a note of thanks for a wedding gift, whether or not verbal thanks were given. Protocol suggests you have up to 3 months to send your notes, but it is preferable to send them as the gifts are received.

If you haven’t received a Thank You for a gift given, wait 3 months and then call to see if it was received.

Writing thank you notes is a habit that needs to be formed in the very young. Even small children can draw a picture upon which you help them write “Thank You” for gifts received.
