Resting Heart Rate
The resting heart rate is the number of times the heart beats in one minute while at rest. The most accurate time to take your resting heart rate is before you get out of bed in the morning.
To determine your resting heart rate you will have to plan ahead. You need a watch or clock with a second hand so you can count your pulse for one full minute. You can count your pulse for 15 seconds and multiply by 4, but that is not as accurate.
Practice finding your pulse at your wrist. Place your middle and index fingers on the thumb side of your wrist, just below your thumb pad. Do not use your thumb because your thumb has a pulse point as well. Begin your count at zero, to be most accurate.
After you have counted your resting heart rate, you can use it to determine your personalized target zone.
Of course, the easiest way to check your heart rate is to use a heart rate monitor, or a blood pressure with pulse rate monitor. You can find many varieties on the market today.
