Embarrassed by your kids in a restaurant? How do they act at the dinner table at home? How do you act for that matter? Kids (all of us really) learn much faster from actions than from words. Be sure you mimic what you teach them at the table:
Sit still and with good posture.Place napkins in your lap.Put the hand not holding a utensil in your lap.Use utensils appropriately.Be polite—“Pass the butter, please!” Don’t reach and grab.Thank the cook for the meal—whether you like it or not!!!Don’t leave the table until everyone is finished eating.Request permission to be excused from the table—A Thank You is needed here too.
Start teaching these things (more could be added to the list) to your children from the first time you put them up at the table in their high chair. Show by example. No—they can’t do it all but they can see you doing it and they can understand. If they point to something they want—say, “Milk please” as you hand it to them. You’ll be surprised how fast they learn to say “please”.
When you notice that you have well behaved children at your own dinner table you can feel confident that they will be well behaved at a restaurant!!
