granny’s advice
My grandparents lived in Zimbabwe so I only saw them a few times in my life. One of those times was just a few months after I was married and living in Texas in our first apartment. They were visiting some other relatives not too far away and stopped by to spend the night with us. The next morning I had planned to make pancakes for breakfast and was trying to be a good hostess. My Granny asked me several times if there was anything she could do to help me. I kept assuring her I could handle everything and encouraging her to sit and relax. I was beating and beating my pancake mixture trying to make it smooth and creamy. She told me that pancake mix was suppose to be a little lumpy and quietly gave me some additional advice. She said that it made guests feel welcome and useful to allow them to help, even just a little bit. We spent the rest of the morning together in the kitchen, making breakfast and cleaning up. What a wonderful bonding time. I have always remembered that advice and tried to follow it.
