Flexibility Basics
Body alignment, proper tension, appropriate length of time and frequency are the basics of any stretch. If you’ll learn the rules of stretching, you’re program will benefit.
Rules of Stretching
Flexibility and warming up are two separate elements. Stretching cold muscles increases your risk of pulled muscles. Before stretching, gently pump your arms and legs for a few minutes. See warm up.
Stretch to the point of comfortable tension. Concentrate of a pain-free stretch.
Don’t bounce. Bouncing can cause injury to the muscle fibers. Hold the stretch steady and allow the muscle to relax into the stretch.
Hold each stretch for at least 30 seconds, more for a really tight muscle group. Breathe evenly throughout the stretch. Holding your breath promotes tension.
Frequency and consistency are the keys to developing flexibility. Stretch whenever you think about it. Certainly, stretch as often as you exercise.
