  Finding Your Pulse

To monitor your heart rate using your target heart rate zone, you will need to be able to find your pulse.

You should take your pulse after 10 to 20 minutes of exercise. If you take your pulse by hand you will want to count the number of heartbeats in 10 seconds and multiply by 6. An easier, but not as accurate a count can be taken by counting the number of heart beats in 6 seconds multiplied by 10.

Practice finding your pulse at your wrist. Place your middle and index fingers on the thumb side of your wrist, just below your thumb pad. Do not use your thumb because your thumb has a pulse point as well. Begin your count at zero, to be most accurate.

If you have trouble finding your pulse, you can always use rate of perceived exertion scale. Or, for a little high-tech help, you can find a variety of heart rate monitors or, my personal favorite, the blood pressure/pulse wrist monitor.
