Dietary Guidelines for Americans: Part 1
Nutrition and Your Health: Dietary Guidelines for Americans is published jointly every 5 years by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Department of Agriculture (USDA). They provide authoritative advice for people two years and older about how good dietary habits can promote health and reduce risk for major chronic diseases. They serve as the basis for Federal food and nutrition education programs.
In a nutshell, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans are:
AIM FOR FITNESS Aim for a healthy weight. Be physically active each day.
BUILD A HEALTHY BASE Let the Pyramid guide your food choices. Choose a variety of grains daily, especially whole grains. Choose a variety of fruits and vegetables daily. Keep food safe to eat.
CHOOSE SENSIBLY Choose a diet that is low in saturate fat and cholesterol and moderate in total fat. Choose beverages and food to moderate your intake of sugars. Choose and prepare foods with less salt. If you drink alcoholic beverages, do so in moderation.
