consistency

Consistency is key. It is also very hard to do. Little ones (and bigger ones too) can wear you down. Stick to your rules no matter how many times they beg and cry and say “Just this once”. Then be sure to throw in a special “rule breaking” treat once in awhile as a reward. A “rule breaking” treat is a treat which would usually be against the “rules”, like a half hour of play station time on a school night. It is not a treat for breaking the rules. This special treat only comes if they haven’t been asking for it. Kids feel protected and safe when there is structure (rules) and a schedule, and they can see that you are the boss. Still, some of them will try to be the boss every chance they get. They want to see if you’re still doing your job. Hang in there.
