Time to tackle that closet!
A nice way to start organizing your closet is to take everything out and put it on the bed. Go through each item making 3 piles: keep, throw out/charity and 6 month. Put the 6 month pile in a plastic storage container with the date on a label on the outside. If you haven’t thought about anything in it by the date, throw it all out or give it away!
Don’t keep things that are worn out, torn or stained (unless they can be mended or cleaned). Help organize your closet by looking at each item and decide if the condition is good enough to keep.
Before putting everything back in your closet, vacuum and dust!
Before storing clothes away, have them cleaned if they have been worn. Oils from skin, perfumes and deodorants can attract bugs.
As the seasons change, store your winter or summer clothes in a plastic container. Spread out a thin, clean, 100% cotton, white towel or sheet in the container with your clothes to keep moisture away.
Put a couple cedar blocks in the storage containers as well to help keep things smelling fresh and keep bugs away.
You can make more room for your hanging clothes by doing the following:
- Hang everything facing the same direction
- Use the same type of hangers. You can even make it fun and pretty by using those colorful plastic hangers. Use purple for your clothes and blue for his. Having things color coated and organized makes you feel good every time you open your closet.
- Hanging similar clothes together will help you find things. For instance, put all short sleeve shirts together, then long sleeve and so on.
