Beginner Modifications: Buttocks
Sometimes all we need is a little help from our friends. Why avoid some of the best “built like a brick house” exercises just because we don’t know where to start? Next time you have a broom in your hand, put it to some REALLY good use. Build a better butt.
Standing Lunge with a little help Starting Position: Stand with one foot 2 or 3 feet in front of the other foot. (The distance will depend upon what is necessary to maintain proper knee alignment when you bend both legs. Do NOT allow the kneecap to stick out ahead of the foot.) Tighten your abdominal muscles. Using a broom handle or vacuum sweep tube to assist you, bend both legs so the back knee dips toward the floor. Push into both legs to return to the starting position. As you become stronger, use the broom handle less and less.

Squat with a little help Starting Position: Stand in front of a stool or chair, with your feet in a wide stance (more than shoulder width apart). Use a broom handle or vacuum sweeper tube to assist you. Keeping your knees aligned with your feet, and your abs tight, bend forward slightly, allowing your hips to push out behind you. Using the broom for support, begin to lower your body into a sitting position: but don’t sit. The stool or chair is to keep you from allowing your thighs to dip past parallel. Make sure your knees are aligned with your feet: Slowing push into your legs to return yourself to the starting position. As you become stronger, use the broom handle less and less.
